Do you love God? That is the Great Commandment Jesus gave us:
"And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength." - Mark 12:28-30
So, do you? Do you love God with all of your 1). Heart? 2). Soul? 3). Mind? 4). Strength? It doesn't take great insight to discover that Jesus is clearly referring to totality. Total being. Total devotion. Total exclusivity. You must love Him more than your father or mother (Mt. 10:37). You must love Him more than you love your own life (Jn. 12:25). Sounds crazy, right? Jesus wants total commitment. He rebuked the church at Ephesus when he told them that he must be our first love (Rev. 2:4). So, is Jesus your first love, your supreme love, your one and only total love?
While we are going to focus our attention on all 4 actions of our strategy this year, 2019 is going to be the year that we focus on Loving God. Why? Because if we are honest with ourselves as a church, we all know that the answer to the question above is probably "no, we don't love God in totality." The better we love God, the better we will equip families in our church. The more we love God, the more we will serve our community. The deeper we fall in love with Jesus, the more we will and the further we will go around the world to serve him. The other 3 actions in our church strategy are outflow of the first one, Loving God.
No, every sermon is not going to be the same thing. However, we are going to pay attention to how we love God this year. We are going to answer the questions; "What does it mean to love God?" "Why do we love God?" and "How can we better love God?" Some of the sermons series that you will hear this year will include: "Loving God and Family," "Loving God Globally," and "Loving God Prayerfully."
2018 was such an awesome year, but I am looking forward to 2019 as a church family! I am looking forward to seeing what God is going to do in us at WCBC and through us. I want to challenge each of you to faithfully love God this year.
One particular way we can love God is to listen to God. It's not too late for you begin reading through the Bible with us this year. We are using the F260 Bible Reading Plan. It's only 5 days a week, giving you the weekends to catch up when life gets in the way. You can download the pdf here.
I still believe that the best days of West Canton Baptist Church are ahead of us! 2019 is going to be great as we love God together!!
